Did you know it's Tinnitus Awareness Week?

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present.

If you experience what is commonly referred to as ‘ringing in the ears’, you may have tinnitus. You may also perceive other sounds such as buzzing, hissing, whistling, swooshing and clicking.

Tinnitus can be both temporary and permanent. It can be heard in one ear, both ears or even in your head rather than your ears.

Common Causes of Tinnitus

It is comforting to know that tinnitus is not a disease. Tinnitus is a symptom of a wide range of conditions. It can be caused by:

  • Exposure to loud noise (the most common cause of tinnitus)

  • Earwax build-up

  • Ear infection

  • Meniere’s disease

  • Head and neck injuries

  • Benign tumours of the cranial nerve
