What is Meniere’s Disease?

Meniere’s disease (MD) affects the inner ear, specifically the vestibular which is the balance organ of the inner ear. MD can affect one or both ears and is typically diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 60 years old.

Meniere’s Disease - Common Symptoms

Symptoms include:

  • Recurrent and spontaneous bouts of sudden onset vertigo
  • Fluctuating hearing loss in the affected ear that often most affects lower frequencies
  • Unilateral tinnitus
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear/s

What causes Meniere’s Disease

The cause of MD is often attributed to overproduction or poor reabsorption of the fluid in the vestibular organ, known and endolymphatic hydrops. There is some research to suggest there is also a genetic predisposition associated with MD.

Managing Meniere’s Disease

Diagnosis of MD involves seeing an audiologist for a hearing test and possible electrophysiological testing, as well as an Ear Nose and Throat specialist (ENT) who can monitor the progression of MD and manage symptoms.

Treatments can be utilised to help with the management of MD, however there is no cure at present.

Some therapies include:

  • Medication for vertigo
  • Salt restriction or other dietary management
  • Injections of medication
  • Hearing aids to assist with ongoing hearing loss
